The striking brick facade of Wilmina Berlin, a former women's prison, now transformed with a large arched window revealing warm interior lights, surrounded by a lush, wild garden.

Berlin is a city that thrives on reinvention. From industrial warehouses turned art hubs to bunkers repurposed as galleries, the German capital has always had a way of reshaping its past into something unexpectedly beautiful. Among its most striking transformations stands Wilmina, a boutique hotel that carries an extraordinary history within its walls.

A Building with a Heavy Past

The red brick exterior of Wilmina Berlin, a historic building covered in ivy, with a lush green garden in the foreground under a bright sky.

Long before it welcomed travelers, Wilmina served as a women’s prison in the Charlottenburg district. Built in the late 19th century, its cells once confined women and young girls, many for minor infractions that today might seem unimaginable. During World War II, the prison’s story darkened further as political prisoners and dissidents were held within its high brick walls.

For decades after the prison closed, the building sat in disrepair. Its haunting silence became a reminder of a painful chapter in Berlin’s history.

Breathing New Life into Old Walls

Rather than erasing the past, Berlin-based architects Grüntuch Ernst embraced it. Their vision was not to hide Wilmina’s history but to carefully transform it into a sanctuary of light, peace, and reflection.

Today, the old cells have been reimagined as serene guest rooms. The long corridors, once austere and cold, now glow with soft natural light. Where prison bars once cast shadows, vertical gardens and calming courtyards create a sense of openness.

This sensitive design approach earned Wilmina the 2022 German Architecture Award, celebrated as a triumph in adaptive reuse.

Where History Meets Hospitality

What makes Wilmina remarkable is not just its architecture. It is the way it invites guests to experience history without being overwhelmed by it. Each space feels intentional. The preserved details remind visitors of the past, while thoughtful design choices speak to resilience and renewal.

Guests can wander through the central courtyard, linger in quiet reading nooks, or enjoy Berlin’s vibrant food scene at the property’s restaurant and bar, all while reflecting on the contrast between confinement and freedom.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Wilmina is not only a design marvel. It is also a sustainable hotel that aligns with the values of Impact Hotels.

  • Adaptive Reuse: By repurposing the prison instead of demolishing it, the project saved massive amounts of construction waste and reduced its environmental footprint.

  • Energy Efficiency: Smart systems and efficient insulation minimize energy use while maintaining comfort.

  • Green Spaces: Courtyards and vertical gardens breathe life into the property, supporting biodiversity in an urban setting.

This combination of sustainability and storytelling makes Wilmina more than just a place to stay. It is a place with purpose.
